Course Outlines
Nursery
Much of the work done involves pupils experiencing a variety of apparatus to introduce skills such as throwing, catching, aiming, striking, kicking, etc. There is also gymnastics work to encourage creativity and body management and awareness through movement.
Primary
The lower primaries programme is very similar to the work done in nursery. Through middle to upper primaries the work done in PE becomes more structured and the individual and partner work introduced in the early stages progresses on to work done in larger groups requiring more co-operation. Each primary class has a 6-week block of swimming incorporating water skills and stroke development.
The activities in the primary curriculum include: Swimming, Small apparatus work, Gymnastics, Ball work, Athletics, Rounders, Dance, Ball games, and Racket games.
S1 & S2
Within the S1 & S2 course pupils experience a range of activities are taught in 6 – 8 week blocks. By covering a broad range of activities it is the intention that pupils realise areas of ability and enjoyment and gain the experience to enable them to make informed choices about their participation in physical activities within their lives.
The activities included in the course are: Basketball; Swimming; Gymnastics; Badminton; Athletics; Trampolining; Volleyball; Indoor Hockey; Summer Games (soft ball/ rounders/ cricket).

S3 & S4
- Core PE
Pupils in S3 & S4 receive 1 period of core PE per week. The emphasis is on participation and pupils are given more choice over the activities they do.
- Standard Grade
The activities included in the Standard Grade course are: Athletics, Badminton, Survival Swimming, Trampolining and Volleyball. There is also a Thematic Study done which focuses on the 3 areas of Knowledge & Understanding of the course.
- Health & Exercise
In S3 & S4 pupils can choose to take this 12-week course. The course looks at the relationship between physical activity and health. In addition to participating in activities and fitness tests, pupils also learn about the structure of the body and the effects of exercise on it, safety procedures associated with physical activity etc.
