Additional Support Needs can cover pupils who experience:
- learning difficulties
- social and emotional difficulties
- behavioural, physical and medical difficulties
- English as a second language
It also covers pupils of high ability and those who benefit from small group tuition to help develop specific skills. The provision of Additional Support Needs can be temporary or long term.
The Additional Support Needs Teacher will:
- Assist class teachers in the early identification of support requirements for groups and individuals
- Review referral forms with the Head Teacher to consider an appropriate programme of support
- Consult with the relevant staff regularly to ensure optimum effectiveness of provision
- Inform parents in writing of the areas of support being covered with their child
- Provide advice and guidance regarding early intervention, programmes of work, strategies and resources
- Prepare and develop forward plans in consultation with class teachers, including an Individual Education Programme (I.E.P)
- Contribute to the effective assessment and reporting of pupil progress
- Keep abreast of National and Authority developments in the 5 – 14 programme
- Provide personal and small group tuition for pupils with specific difficulties or abilities
