What is Eco-Schools?

Eco-Schools is a scheme, which supports schools to raise pupils’ awareness of environmental issues through curriculum work and specific environmental projects.

The eco-schools programme links to most if not all curriculum areas.  In particular, many cross-curricular issues such as citizenship, enterprise and personal, social and health education can be tackled through involvement in Eco-Schools.

It is an accredited award scheme.  Schools who achieve eco-school status receive a Green Flag to display in their school.  If a school achieves 4 Green Flags then they can be awarded permanent eco-school status.

Green Flag Status
Following a visit from assessors in November 2012, Scalloway Primary School has now been awarded its third Green Flag. This award recognises the fact that the school has both continued the original projects on litter, recycling and school grounds which gained the first flag and gone on to develop new projects.   The assessors were impressed by the new environmental projects on energy and biodiversity being developed in the school and by the commitment of all pupils and staff to these projects. The school will now receive a new flag to replaced the well worn original.
