Eco-Schools
What is Eco-Schools?
Eco-Schools is a scheme, which supports schools to raise pupils’ awareness of environmental issues through curriculum work and specific environmental projects.
The eco-schools programme links to most if not all curriculum areas. In particular, many cross-curricular issues such as citizenship, enterprise and personal, social and health education can be tackled through involvement in Eco-Schools.
It is an accredited award scheme. Schools who achieve eco-school status receive a Green Flag to display in their school. If a school achieves 4 Green Flags then they can be awarded permanent eco-school status.
Scalloway School Eco-Committee
Scalloway has achieved 2 green flags and is working towards achieving a third flag. The school has an eco-committee made up of primary and secondary pupils, teaching and auxiliary staff and parents. Click here to see the minutes of the committee’s meetings. These are also displayed on the school’s eco-noticeboard.

Following a whole school competition the school now has an eco-code - a set of environmental promises.
The committee has completed a number of environmental projects.
These include:
- Improving the school playgrounds
- Developing a school garden
- An anti-litter campaign
- Reducing energy use in the school
- Promoting healthy eating through changes to the tuckshop and canteen.
The eco-committee made successful bids for funding to the Big Lottery Fund to meet the costs of redesigning the two primary playgrounds and funding from a local authority challenge fund has also paid for a model windmill/solar panel soon to be set up on the school rooftop and some new litterbins for the school.
In addition the school has increased its recycling efforts with pupils/staff being encouraged to recycle cans, plastic bottles and newspapers.
A travel plan for the school to encourage more pupils to walk/cycle to school has also been drawn up as a result of joint working between the eco-committee and the Junior Road Safety Officers.
